GB’s 3x3 Women’s team won one of their two FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series qualifying fixtures in Bordeaux, France, meaning they won’t progress to the pool stage of the competition.

This was the third Women’s series tournament that GB took part in, having reached the quarter-finals of the Edmonton, Canada stop, at the beginning of August, and the pool stage out in Sumqayit, Azerbaijan.

Head Coach Krumesh Patel took a similar squad to Bordeaux that featured in those events.

Sharpshooter Sam Ashby returned after a dominant performance in Edmonton, where she led the nation in scoring.

Veterans Georgia Gayle and Cheridene Green provided interior scoring and a wealth of experience, whilst guard Nina Rickards’ handling and playmaking proved essential to the function of the offence.

GB ultimately split the qualifying stage, losing to Thailand in their opener before beating Portugal 11-21 in their second and final match. As Thailand beat Portugal, they progressed to the pool stage of the competition.

This was GB’s final stop on the 2025 Women’s Series, which concludes in September.

GB have gained invaluable experience and knowledge in their inaugural 3x3 Women’s Series, building up ranking points and developing team chemistry, which will hold them in good standing in future competitions.

Speaking to GB Basketball after the tournament, Head Coach Patel said, “The Women’s Series has been great so far. I think we’ve learned a lot.

“Every stop, we've learned and got better in different areas.

“We’ve had an opportunity to look at six different girls playing in different ways.

“We competed against the best. We qualified for one, we finished sixth in one, we barely missed out on the other one, so for our first-ever Women’s series, we learned a lot, and we know what we need to do to be better in the next one.

“The biggest thing is, we've been competitive all the way. So, if we keep this going, we'll only continue to grow in the Women’s Series.”

Game 1: Thailand VS Great Britain

Coach Patel’s assessment of GB’s competitiveness in the Women’s Series was more than fair, exemplified by their rugged display against a talented Thailand side.

Cheridene Green led the way for GB in this one, leaning on her experience and quality footwork to score seven of GB’s 17 total points.

She kick-started the scoring, collecting two quick buckets in the first minute. Rickards added two more, showing off her crafty finishing at the rim.

Thailand ran out to an 11-5 lead as the twos started to fall for Rattiyakorn Udomsuk.

GB cut back through a two-pointer of their own from Sam Ashby, whilst Green continued her fine scoring form, but Udomsuk’s prolific shooting proved too much. She finished with 15 points and five two-pointers to her name.

Ultimately, Thailand grabbed the win, despite an impressive four-point binge from Green to end the game.

Game 2: Portugal VS Great Britain

GB dominated their second match against Portugal.

Georgia Gayle knocked down her shot from deep to open her account for GB; she led all scorers in the game with nine points, including three two-pointers.

After Ashby cashed in on a two as well, GB stormed to an early 1-5 lead.

Whilst GB faced some resistance from Gabriela Ipinosa and Alize Mota Martins, who scored five and four points respectively, they led all throughout the match, with Ashby’s accurate shooting and Green’s expert paint touches supporting Gayle’s nine-point performance.

Although GB failed to progress in the tournament, they made huge progress as a squad and have placed the nation on the map for future 3x3 tournaments.

“For next, now, hopefully, we can continue to prepare, and then we'll go to the Europe Cup,” Coach Patel told GB Basketball, speaking on the future of the 3x3 Women’s team.

“The girls qualified for Europe Cup earlier in the summer, and that's our opportunity to go to Copenhagen and make sure that we can continue to develop in that situation and compete.

“Europe Cup is a good chance to see how far we can go, and we want to try to go as far as we can.”

GB qualified for the Europe Cup back in June when they swept their qualifying group.

The Europe Cup is the continent’s highest-level international 3x3 tournament and begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 5 September.

GB have been drawn into Pool C, alongside Spain and Hungary, and will look to build on the experience they have gained in the Women’s Series to produce a quality performance out in Denmark.
