The British Basketball Coaching Guidelines: Areas of Emphasis: (2014 revised edition) is the guiding British Basketball
The document was selectively released in 2011 as part of the British Basketball’s “Game On “strategy and is considered paramount for the teaching of basketball in Britain. When originally launched in the home nations the AoE was focused on a top down approach but is now targeted at all coaches at all levels.
Since 2011 it has helped to achieve improved National Youth Team performance in international competition and has also impacted many thousands of players and coaches domestically in the Performance Pathway. It will be now supported in 2015 with the release of a new Club Skills Guide.
The Coaching Guideline Document has two sections
The AoE is written in two sections. The Executive summary (Section A) offers
There are Eight (8) supporting strategies offered to aid successful implementation by the Home Nations and coaches including a well defined Pathway, a common glossary, basic skills master checklist and National Shooting tests
Section B is the Physical, technical & tactical priority areas of the curriculum and this has not been in as wide a circulation as it was principally targeted for the performance pathway in each Home country or to coaches upon request. It is now being released to all levels and is recommended reading for all coaches.
What are the Areas of Emphasis?
(section B) focuses on NINE (9) curriculum areas of skill or play for better coaching. It offers guidance in the Physical, Technical and Tactical areas.
It also recognizes that there are Eight (8) basic fundamentals that underpin the AoE and are important to acknowledge as BASICS to skill development.
Clear direction to coaches
The Overview for Understanding shows the skill area with the clear coaching actions for each.
There are specific recommendations for coaches, clubs, schools and the national system at the conclusion of each AoE.
A Master Basic skills checklist outlines the specific basic skills
There are also six (6) Important implementation themes for coaching the AoE aimed at ensuring a better coaching process.
