FIBA’s Her World, Her Rules camps to return for second year

GB Basketball today confirmed the return of FIBA’s Her World, Her Rules campaign for a second year.

The programme, which is aimed at young females under the age of 14, is designed to attract more young players to the sport and tackle the disparity between male and female participation.

Over the last year FIBA has worked alongside several European National Federations to deliver the programme, investing up to €1 million over a two-year period. The project is supported by some of the world’s most prominent female players such as Alba Torrens, Emma Meesseman and Maria Vadeeva.

All twelve WBBL teams were engaged in the programme during its launch in 2019, with each club delivering activities such as clinics and skills sessions across England, Scotland and Wales. Several hundred young female players took part in the events, with players from several clubs,  including members of GB Women’s squad, taking the time to pass on their skills and experience to the next generation.

GB Basketball Director Nicky Shaw, a member of FIBA Europe’s Women’s Commission, said:

“We are delighted to once again work with the WBBL in delivering this very important project to provide access to our sport. This programme supplements the work the WBBL clubs already undertake across Great Britain, in engaging more females to take part in  Basketball,  supporting the initiatives in England, Scotland and Wales.”

“The standing of women’s basketball in Britain has never been higher and the Her World Her Rules campaign gives the opportunity to build on this and raise the profile of the sport among younger girls. The WBBL clubs are once again fully supporting this initiative by offering opportunities in their respective regions for girls to get involved in this international initiative. The participants will have the opportunity of meeting some of the professional players and will hopefully be inspired to get involved in both the programme and the sport.”

The announcement of the funding comes during a time in which women’s basketball has enjoyed a successful period in the UK, as GB Women secured a historic fourth place finish at the 2019 EuroBasket Women in Belgrade. The success at the competition secured GB’s place at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, where the squad represented Great Britain against some of the world’s top teams, including top-ten ranked China and Spain.
