Intro
GB face China tomorrow morning in the first game of the 2020 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia. The game is the first of three in the group, with three of the four teams booking their tickets to Tokyo 2020 this summer.
The opposition: CHINA
China come into the tournament on the back of a silver medal at the 2019 FIBA Asia Cup. A 80-52 win over fellow Group B opponents Korea was followed by a narrow 71-68 defeat to Japan in the Final.
The team finished sixth the year before at the 2018 FIBA World Cup. Group stage victories over Senegal and Latvia were followed up with an 87-81 win over Japan, booking China their place in the Quarter-Finals, before they suffered a heavy defeat to Australia, 83-42.
TEAM’S THOUGHTS
Hannah Shaw still believes GB are underdogs against a China side with World Cup and Olympic experience:
“They are ranked top 10 in the world and they are a really solid organisation. They’ve been to the Olympics regularly over the last 20 years or so, so this is a big underdog game for us but we’re all feeling positive. We know that if we play our way and control our controlables then we’ll get the results we want.”
“Preps been great too, coming into Serbia instead of China has really helped us out in terms of travelling and time differences. We’re all ready to go.”
