We go again! GB fear no-one – Hesson, Okereafor
Great Britain’s men go into their EuroBasket 2021 qualifying group with confidence sky-high following their record-setting seven-game winning streak.
And team stalwarts Myles Hesson and Teddy Okereafor believe there is a rock-solid spirit in the squad that beat Kosovo and Luxembourg home and away to progress from pre-qualifying.
GB face Montengro, France and Germany in their qualifying group next year with the top three going through to the finals.
Captain Hesson says they will approach that admittedly tougher challenge with no fear and a genuine sense of togetherness.
Of the seven-game winning run, he said: “It means a lot. Winning games is what we’re out here trying to do and winning seven in a row is great.
“It gives us great confidence going into the next round.”
Hesson, along with Okereafor an ever-present during that successful streak, hailed the mood in the GB camp.
He added: “They made it easy for me (to be captain) and they made it easy for themselves by coming together as a team. Against Kosovo at home we had 32 assists, against Luxembourg away we had quite a few as well. It shows the camaraderie we have together that we want to see each other do well.
“We’ve shown we can play good basketball. We’ve beat the teams that were put in front of us and now there more teams in front of us that we have to go out and beat.”
Okereafor, who has played in the team’s last 43 games in a row, said: “It’s a testament to everybody that plays for the team and how much pride they take in putting on the GB jersey.
“We all want to win and progress the sport and compete with the best teams in Europe. We have to keep being dedicated and play the right way like we did this entire window and I think we’ve got a bright future.
“We’re not here to hang around and play close with these teams. We want to beat them and be aggressive.
“We’re here to compete. we’ve got guys in all these countries and when we come back on the same team it’s like ‘let’s show we can play the same way that they can play’.
“We’re not scared, we’re fighting to prove we can play. That’s what we did this window and coach Nate Reinking did a great job, assistant coach Jamie Smith did a great job of preparing. We play, we practice and we take care of business.
“I’m excited going into EuroBasket qualifying now against better teams. We’ll see what happens.”
