BRITISH BASKETBALL FEDERATION WELCOMES SUPER LEAGUE BASKETBALL
BRITISH BASKETBALL FEDERATION WELCOMES SUPER LEAGUE BASKETBALL
The British Basketball Federation (BBF) welcomes Super League Basketball’s (SLB) confirmation of arrangements for the 2024/25 season. Coming just two months after the difficult but necessary decision to terminate the previous licence to operate a men’s professional league, this represents another important step forward in British Basketball’s mission to provide a stable base for the sustainable growth of the game.
In celebrating the ongoing participation of nine clubs, we also share the whole basketball community’s disappointment that Plymouth City Patriots will not be tipping off for the new season. Basketball’s popularity is GB-wide, and a key aim over the coming years will be to ensure that no fan has to travel long distances in order to experience the excitement of top-level men’s and women’s basketball.
Today’s announcements come on the back of an immense effort behind the scenes. We particularly want to acknowledge the unity and focus of the clubs who took on the interim licence to operate the league through their jointly-owned company. We shall continue to work with Super League Basketball to ensure that the League can thrive as we move towards the award of a longer-term licence, which will be conducted through an open bidding process.
We all know that, as well as providing spectacular sporting entertainment, basketball can be an economic powerhouse; a force for community cohesion and a catalyst for young peoples’ learning and health. Strong professional men’s and women’s clubs competing in well-run leagues play a pivotal role in delivering the game’s immense positive impact. We’re delighted to welcome Super League Basketball and look forward to working together for the success of British basketball both on and off the court.
