Spectator stands named in honour of GB Basketball legends
The GB women are taking on Sweden in the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 qualifier and eagle-eyed ticket purchasers might well have noticed the special names that have been given to the stands for this game.
The stands have been named in honour of two GB Basketball legends – Chantelle Handy and Jo Leedham-Warner.
Chantelle has been capped 140 times for Great Britain, played at the London 2012 Olympics, and won a silver medal in the 3×3 basketball at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. She also recently joined the GB coaching set up after taking up the role of head coach to the women’s Under 20 side.
Jo earned a total of 91 GB caps for the Great Britain women’s basketball team and is also an Olympian, EuroBasket veteran and FIBA Euro Cup winner.
Kieron Achara, Technical Lead at the British Basketball Federation, explained why the British Basketball Federation has decided to honour the players in this way:
“The naming of the stands is our way of acknowledging the contribution of two leading GB players and role models in British Basketball. Chantelle and Jo are legends of the GB women’s game and fully deserve this honour.”
It is hoped that other Great Britain women’s basketball legends will be honoured during this FIBA EuroBasket 2025 campaign, so look out for more details.
The game is the first in the qualification campaign for FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2025, which will be held in the summer of 2025, but to qualify the GB women’s team need to first play games against Sweden, Denmark and Estonia both at home and away.
