A fair few records are set to be etched into the history books in this EuroBasket competition for the Great Britain Men’s National Team, and the first one comes to pass tomorrow as veteran forward Myles Hesson becomes the 11th player to reach 50 senior caps for the Men’s team when he suits up to take on Ukraine in the team’s EuroBasket opener.
Only ten players in the 74-year history of the Great Britain Men’s National Team have reached that 50-cap milestone (Eric Boateng, Dan Clark, Kieron Achara, Drew Sullivan, Kyle Johnson, Nate Reinking, Andrew Lawrence, Gareth Murray, Ogo Adegboye, and Teddy Okereafor), with Hesson among a quartet of stars who could notch their half-centuries at EuroBasket
Speaking ahead of the tournament opener against Ukraine where Hesson will win his 50th cap, he said:
“I do take these achievements very seriously, and it is a huge honour to get to 50 caps. There aren’t many people who have managed to achieve this before me, so it is very special to be part of such a group, and I’m just grateful to have got this far.
“The first one is probably the most special and memorable for me, but since then there have been so many games, ups and downs, good and bad games, but the last few years with a really great core group have been really good.
“I would never have expected to be a co-captain of the team when I started or anything like that, but it has all just happened naturally and I’ve had a lot of belief shown in me by the staff and my teammates and it has been a great ride.
“It has been such a long campaign to get to this point at EuroBasket, playing in a lot of countries against a lot of different teams, but the hard work has paid off so far as we’re here and on the cusp of competing, but we’ve got another bit of hard work to do now ahead of the next round.”
