GB U16 MEN: AUSTRIA 45-62 GB

11th August 2019
Sultan Adewale (FIBA)

GB scored their second win in the U16 Division B tournament 45 – 62 against an Austria side lacking in confidence and now rooted to the bottom of Group D.

A poor first quarter from both sides saw only 8 made baskets and 19pts total, as GB edged a 10-9 lead.

The second quarter saw more of the same, with defences on top and poor shooting from both teams. Austria only made four field goals in the half, relying on their foul shooting for half their points. GB shot 10/43 from the field but somehow found themselves in the lead at the half, 22-18

GB finally found the offensive mojo straight out of the changing rooms, starting the 3rd with a 15-0 run to blow the game open. They kept Austria scoreless for the first 6mins 30secs of the quarter and kept them to just 5pts in the frame as they opened up a 43-23 lead, nearly doubling their points from the first half. Michael Belle and Quin Ellis finished the quarter with double figure points.

The final quarter was a more fluid affair as both teams found some offensive form. The result was never in doubt as the lead stayed above 15pts. GB were comfortable and eventually ran out winners 62-45. Sultan Adewale led all scorers with 16pts, to go with his 14 rebounds. Belle and Ellis also had double figures, with 15 and 14pts respectively. Belle also had a double double, with 17 rebounds to add to his scoring.

GB join Finland and Romania with two wins and after a rest day on Sunday, they will face Belgium who are top of Group D with three victories so far.
