WILKINSON AND GB FOUND THEIR FLOW AGAINST ESTONIA
Savannah Wilkinson secured a double-double in Great Britain’s win over Estonia on Thursday night, saying everyone found their flow, three months removed from their last game together.
GB dismissed the Estonians 93-42 in their FIBA Women’s EuroBasket, Group D qualifier, having raced to a 7-3 lead, which they never relinquished, and scored the sizable win that they needed to improve to 3-2 ahead of Sunday’s clash with Denmark.
Sam Ashby led Great Britain with 12 points, all of which came in the first half; Shanice Beckford-Norton and Holly Winterburn added 11, with Temi Fagbenle helping herself to 10.
Wilkinson was the all-around standout, posting 11 points and 10 rebounds, admitting that the team around her made it easy for her to get those numbers.
“Having great players around me makes it easier for me to rebound when I know people are boxing out, so I can grab that board for myself,” Wilkinson joked.
“But in all seriousness, we all helped each other out. It was an unselfish performance; everyone contributed.
“It was a great spread on the scoreboard, we all played hard from the jump, everyone contributed, Bo [Guttormsdottir-Frost] got her first points, which was amazing to see.
“We all played hard, making ourselves accountable to make sure we reach that next level which is important for us.”
All GB players that saw court time scored in Thursday’s win, and Wilkinson wants that momentum to carry on ahead of the game against Denmark on Sunday lunchtime.
“We wanted to build momentum and leave ourselves in the best possible position for Denmark. We know that’ll be tough, but we have to focus on ourselves.”
