U23 3×3 NATIONS LEAGUE MORE THAN JUST A PLACE AT THE WORLD CUP
Great Britain’s participation in the upcoming FIBA U23 3X3 Nations League is not just about challenging for a spot at the FIBA U23 3X3 World Cup.
It’s also a significant step in the development of 3X3 basketball in the country, as the men square off in Pool A against Israel and Hungary, with women going up against Poland and Hungary in Pool A.
With GB still emerging in this exciting basketball format, having junior teams competing in major tournaments will further help nurture and blossom, making them even more of a threat to opposing teams moving forward.
Building on England’s men winning gold and the women claiming silver at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, Great Britain’s men secured their spot for the FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup for the first time next month via the Qualifiers, despite being the lowest-ranked side.
While the women narrowly missed out on qualifying for the FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup, they showed incredible determination en route to the finals before losing narrowly to an experienced Romania side.
Great Britain’s U23 3X3 women’s coach, Sarah Hopkins-Chery, believes that having a youth side will only benefit the national team program.
“These events are crucial to the development and growth of the 3×3 game in GB,” Hopkins said.
“They provide current players with important opportunities to improve through competition, grow awareness of the game, and allow more players the opportunity to continuing playing at a national team level.
“We are looking forward to gaining valuable game experience, building upon our development in camp, and represent GB with pride.”
It’s a feeling echoed by men’s coach Afiz Olaniyan, who wants to continue developing the national team talent pool for 3X3 basketball.
“These kinds of events play a crucial role in further improving the 3×3 game in GB,” said Olaniyan.
“I firmly believe that they are necessary for our development. The exposure and experience gained from participating in such events contribute significantly to our learning and growth as athletes.
“Our goals ahead of the event are to put into practice the concepts and playing style that have been incorporated during our training camp. We aim to test our strategies and skills on the court and ultimately secure qualification through our performance.”
