Self-belief key as Women’s team face decisive qualifiers, says Gayle
As tough, gritty and fearless as they come, National Team and Sheffield Hatters star Georgia Gayle certainly embodies what Great Britain basketball is all about.
This week, as Chema Buceta’s side head towards two home games against Estonia and Portugal that will determine GB’s hopes of qualifying for EuroBasket 2023, Gayle is full of energy and optimism as she discusses why the team has what it takes to book its place in this summer’s tournament.
“We’re really excited about the challenge ahead of us this week.” Gayle said.
“We know we have to win both games to have a chance of qualifying, but it is definitely possible. Out in Estonia we had a tough game and fell a little short, but we know we can beat them and we’ve beaten Portugal already.
“Being at home is a big plus for us, and personally I feel really at home here in Manchester as well because I’ve played here so many times over the years for Sheffield.
“We always stay positive as a group and this week we have to believe in ourselves because we know we can beat these two teams. We’ve just got to give it our all and the results will take care of themselves.”
Gayle is one of the latest stars to come from a renowned family in British Hoops folklore, including the legendary Betty Codona OBE – who sadly passed away last year – as well as Vanessa and Quinn Ellis.
The 25-year-old guard discussed why that heritage makes her being part of the national team more special to her, and why some very special guests being in attendance at this week’s games gives the fixtures even more meaning for Gayle as GB look to seal a spot at EuroBasket 2023.
“My family played for the England teams before I played for Great Britain – they didn’t have GB teams back then! – so for me to follow in their footsteps in some way is really special. This is the highest level of basketball so to be here is exciting and a real honour.
“I coach a team now myself in Sheffield, so giving those young girls something or somebody to look up to is really important to me. They’ll all be at the game this week so I can’t wait to see them, to have the opportunity to play in front of them for GB and to be part of something that hopefully inspires them.”
