U20 Women: Euro Championship preview, roster confirmed
The Great Britain U20 Women travelled to Greece on Monday to begin their Division B European Championship pre-tournament prep.
Head coach Jeff Jones named his final 12 ahead of the trip and hopes the games in Greece will prepare his side well for their first Group B game of the tournament against Ireland on August 4 in Kosovo.
After taking on Ireland, the women face Ukraine to conclude the Group B fixtures, with the aim of making it through to the second round stage as one of the tournament’s final eight teams.
The roster contains seven of last year’s GB U18 squad, including Loren Christie and Holly Winterburn, both of whom are heading to the US in September having committed to University of Buffalo and University of Oregon respectively. Only two players, Loren Christie and Shauna Harrison, remain from last year’s U20 squad which finished 10th in Romania.
The squad list is as follows:
Charlotte Ellmore | Dani Lozzi | Holy Winterburn | Teresa Da Silva |
Alix Henderson | Loren Christie | Ebony Horton | Maya Price |
Sian Phillips | Shawnisay Millar | Shauna Harrison | Faye Parker |
While in Greece, GB’s preparations got off to a positive start after a 65-59 win against the home nation in yesterday’s friendly.
Of his squad selection, Jones said: “It was a difficult decision but I’m really happy with the 12 selected, their attitude and approach has been excellent. I think we have a good mix of players with international experience and talented players that haven’t played at that level before. It’s a good group of kids and I’m looking forward to the tournament.”
The European Championship Division B structure sees four groups of three teams, with the top two sides from each group proceeded into two groups of four. The top two from each group then advances to the semi-finals whilst the rest play their respective classification games.
