GB v Montenegro
EuroBasket 2022 Qualifier
Sunday 29th November, 17:00 (GMT) tip
Palais des sports de Pau, France
Intro
Just 48 hours after our first qualifier of the November window, we return to Palais des sports de Pau tomorrow evening to face Montenegro in the second game of our November window. With the opposition claiming an 81-74 win when the sides met back in February, it’s an important game in our quest to qualify for EuroBasket 2022.
The opposition: MONTENEGRO
Montenegro come into the game off the back of an 80-74 win over a young Germany side on Friday night – a result which sees them sit second in Group G. Justin Cobbs led the team with 20 points and six assists, whilst Nikola Ivanovic picked up 18 points. The duo are also teammates at club level, both playing for Montenegrin side Buducnost VOLI.
The Montenegro squad looks very different from the one we faced in Podgorica back in February, with Danilo Nikolic, Zoran Nikolic, Nemanja Vranjes, Fedor Zugic and Milko Bjelica all new names who featured in their win over Germany yesterday.
TEAM NEWS
Our roster remains unchanged from last night’s game against France:
Dan Clark, Ashley Hamilton, Myles Hesson, Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye, Ben Mockford, Luke Nelson, Teddy Okareafor, Gabe Olaseni, Rex Pflueger, Traik Phillip, Conner Washington, Akwasi Yeboah.
Head Coach Marc Steutel offered his thoughts on tomorrow’s game whilst speaking at FIBA’s post-game press conference yesterday night:
“It’s a different kind of game but for both teams there’s probably a lot of pressure on the game. We know they’re well organised, well coached, talented. They’ve had a core together, they’ve played in the world cup and they’ve kept that group together – albeit with a new Head Coach.”
“I think us and and Montenegro both know what to expect. They’ll be aware of our strengths and we’re aware of theirs. It’s going to come down to who can execute better on the day. As I say, the competition structure gives us no time to dwell on anything so we’ll dust ourselves off and be the best prepared we can for Sunday.”
