Mark Lloyd appointed as National Teams Manager

The British Basketball Federation has appointed Mark Lloyd as the federation’s new National Teams Manager.

The newly created role, introduced as part of the BBF’s restructuring process, will oversee the recruitment, training, development and support of all Team Managers working for GB Basketball across both senior and age-group teams.

The objective for National Teams Manager is to develop a pathway programme that gives GB Basketball’s Team Managers the support and training needed to progress and develop in their roles.

The programme also aims to grow the volume of trained Team Managers available to the BBF in the coming years.

Over the last two years Mark Lloyd has served as the Team Manager for GB Women, playing an integral part of the team’s journey at EuroBasket Women 2019 and the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2020.

Back in 2013, he held the same position for GB Men during that year’s EuroBasket and has also held multiple positions within GB’s age-group teams.

Involved in international team management continuously for 24 years, Lloyd worked with England’s men at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and with the British wheelchair teams at the European Championships, World Cup and Paralympics between 2004-2006.

On top of his team management experience, Mark has been a well-respected coach in British basketball for the last two decades.

Currently working with Basketball England & UK Coaching as a Coach Mentor and Coach Developer – including on the current Women’s Coaching & Leadership Programme – he has also previously held the roles of Regional Performance Centre Head Coach and Performance Coaching Co-ordinator within Basketball England’s Performance Pathway.

As an academic, Mark ran the Performance Basketball Programme at the University of Essex for four years, winning the Basketball England  National Cup, League title and taking a lead in establishing the current WBBL Franchise, Essex Rebels.

Speaking about his new role within the BBF, Mark shared his ambitions to develop a world-leading programme for Team Managers across Britain:

I am passionate about the management of the Great Britain programmes and want to help develop truly world class Team Managers as our teams compete at the very top level of international sport”

BBF interim Chair, Toni Minichello, acknowledged the importance of the new position at Mark’s abilities to excel in the role: 

“The position of Team Manager is a critical role with all of our GB teams. For this reason, it’s important that the BBF are able to offer support and training for such a critical role. We are delighted to have someone as experienced and respected as Mark agree to take on the role and I look forward to working alongside him to develop the educational pathway and build a success programme for British Team Managers to develop and improve.”
