Marc Steutel confirms 12-man roster for Serbia showdown
Great Britain Men’s National Team Head Coach Marc Steutel has confirmed the 12-man roster for Friday night’s FIBA World Cup Qualifier against Serbia at Newcastle’s Vertu Motors Arena (7pm), with some exciting new faces joining an established core of proven talent.
Coach Steutel has named three Senior National Team debutants in the roster, including Aaron Menzies, Josh Sharma and 19-year-old Quinn Ellis.
Veteran centre Gabe Olaseni will captain the side against Serbia and Devon van Oostrum’s inclusion in the roster sees him move to 49 caps overall for the senior National Team, one cap away from becoming the 14th Men’s player to achieve his half-century of appearances for GB.
Great Britain have already made National Team history by reaching the Second Qualifying Round for the first time ever and are vying for one of the top three positions in Group I which would see them advance to the final tournament in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines next summer.
Following confirmation of the 12-man roster after a positive week in camp at the Vertu Motors Arena, Head Coach Marc Steutel said:
“It is very exciting for everybody to have some debutants in the roster. When we have new players in the group alongside more senior players, it is part of international basketball to go through those cycles and it is really exciting for those just starting their journey now.
“I’ve been proud of how the senior guys have tried to show these new faces the way, as it were, and I’ve been proud of how everybody has committed and competed throughout the week, and those are our biggest strengths.
“It has been a really positive week and new players and coaches getting caps are huge moments for them, but ultimately we hope to be talking about the right outcome tomorrow night above all else.”
