GB confirm one change to 12-man roster for Turkey clash
Great Britain’s 12-man squad for the Sunday’s FIBA 2023 World Cup Qualifier against Turkey has been confirmed.
The final fixture at the end of a week-long camp, which has also seen the Men’s National Team travel to Larissa in Greece for their first game of the window, sees GB return home for the closing fixture of Group B against European powerhouses, Turkey, on Sunday 3 July (4pm BST).
GB go into the game having won 12 of their past 16 outings – a run that extends all the way back to the 2018-19 season and includes wins over the European heavyweights of France, Greece, Germany and Montenegro.
Following Thursday’s fixture in Greece, Head Coach Nate Reinking said:
“Overall I’m very positive after that performance. It was a strong first half from us, but I think eventually the pressure that Greece put on us wore us down and we didn’t come out in the third and handle it very well. We took some questionable shots that led to some easy breaks for them and conceded 26 points from turnovers, which is hard to overcome.
“We saw some really good things overall, though, and there is plenty to build upon. Anybody coming to Greece to play is going to have a difficult task. Our guys stepped up to the challenge and, although we didn’t do that for the full 40 minutes, after just three days of training camp there was some good progress made and hopefully we can just use this as a stepping stone for Sunday against Turkey.”
Jaiden Delaire and Patrick Whelan made their senior debuts against Greece on Thursday, with Callum Lawson once again in contention to make his first GB appearance on Sunday. The team welcome Jacob Round into the 12-man roster in place of Carl Wheatle, who was electric against Greece in Larissa, but unfortunately has had to pull out of Sunday’s game for personal reasons.
