GB confirm 12-man roster for FIBA World Cup qualifier against Belgium
Great Britain’s 12-man squad for the Thursday’s FIBA 2023 World Cup Qualifier against Belgium has been confirmed.
The Men’s National Team have made history by qualifying for the second phase of FIBA World Cup qualifying for the first time ever, and are set to get their campaign underway in Mons on Thursday night as they take on Belgium (7:30pm tip-off) in the first game of the window.
Currently ranked 45th in the world, GB have shown that they can compete with some of the best sides in Europe as they’ve toppled the likes of France, Germany, Greece and Montenegro in recent outings, but will face a stern challenge on the continent against a well-organised and disciplined Belgian side.
Speaking ahead of the confirmation of the 12-man roster, Head Coach Nate Reinking said:
“I’ve been very proud of the way the guys have come into camp and gone about their business since getting together. The chemistry and togetherness of this group has really enabled us to hit the ground running and we’re excited for the challenges that lay ahead of us in Mons on Thursday and back home in Newcastle against Latvia on Sunday.
“Belgium are a very experienced, disciplined, well-coached roster of players. I do see parallels between us and them in terms of the make-up of our roster and the chemistry the team has. Whether you look at our older guys or the younger players coming through, they’ve all come through age groups together and have bonds that go back many years.
“These are two teams that are going to enjoy a good battle, that’s for sure!”
Dan Clark edges closer to securing the all-time Men’s record of 117 caps for Great Britain – a landmark which he is on course to reach at EuroBasket 2022 – whereas the inclusions of Myles Hesson, Ben Mockford and Gabe Olaseni sees the trio edge closer to their own half-centuries of caps for the team.
Luke Nelson and Ovie Soko return to the 12-man roster for the first time this year, and Teddy Okereafor is back in the fold after injury ruled him out of the previous window against Greece and Turkey. Tarik Phillip and Ashley Hamilton miss out on selection for this window due to injury and we wish them both well in their recovery.
