BBL: Bristol Flyers sign Mockford on short-term deal
Bristol Flyers have added Great Britain International Ben Mockford to their roster on a short-term contract.
The 31-year-old guard is set for his third spell in the BBL, having previously played for Plymouth Raiders and Cheshire Phoenix.
Mockford joined the BBL in 2014 and averaged 11.1 points per game for the Raiders during the 2014/15 campaign, shooting 40% from behind the three-point line.
He enjoyed stints in Spain and Greece before returning to the BBL last season, posting 14.4 points per game for Cheshire before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to Bristol Flyers TV, Mockford said: “I’m really happy to join the Flyers and ready to get started.
“It’s been a strange year for everyone. I wasn’t signed up until the recent GB window and I had some conversations with Coach Kapoulas and we managed to come to a deal.
“We built up a relationship over the last two international windows. I’ve known him for a while and he’s a well-respected coach. We had some conversations and it felt like the right fit for me.
“He wants me to come in and help in whatever way I can. Last year I played in the BBL and my role was predominantly to score, but I think this year my role will be game-to-game – I’m just here to help the team win and add some experience.”
Speaking on his new addition, Flyers Head Coach Andreas Kapoulas said: “It’s great to have Ben on board. He is a high impact player with BBL experience that I’ve got to know a lot more during the recent international windows. He fits the club ethos and mentality of our programme.
“We’re entering a busy period with six games in 12 days, so adding Ben to our roster brings extra depth at the guard spots and much-needed experience.
“Keeping fresh legs during this period will allow our guys to go out there and compete for every possession with important fixtures coming up in the schedule.”
