GB discover FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup Qualifying opponents
GB’s Men’s and Women’s 3×3 teams have learned their opponents for June’s FIBA Europe Cup Qualifiers in Constanta, Romania with the pools for the tournament confirmed.
The event on June 4-5 will be GB’s second consecutive outing in the qualifying stages of the Europe Cup, after strong debuts from the Men’s and Women’s teams last year saw the former falling just short at the semi-final stage of qualifying, with the latter winning the qualifiers with an undefeated record and advancing to the 2021 Finals in Paris.
Julius Joseph will once again lead the GB Men’s team as they will face Spain and Turkey in pool action – the Spanish side rank 19th in the world with the Turkish team ranked 48th, just behind GB in 41st.
Looking to make their way back to the Finals, Stef Collins’ Women’s side have been drawn with Hungary and Denmark in their pool.
The Hungarians are an established force in 3×3 basketball, ranking 15th in the world and having finished fifth in last year’s Europe Cup and third in the World Cup, with Denmark ranked 105th globally, compared to GB’s 27th-placed ranking.
GB Men’s 3×3 Head Coach Julius Joseph said: “We are looking forward to returning to the FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup Qualifiers in Romania as this was a great experience for the team last year. It is important the guys are battle tested and comfortable until pressures of the environment of 3×3 basketball and Romania will provide a good test.”
GB Women’s 3×3 Head Coach Stef Collins added: “It’s fantastic for us to be involved in the FIBA Europe Cup Qualifiers for a second time. Last year’s experience was a great stepping stone for the squads to compete at international level with the best in Europe. We look forward to the challenge that lies ahead in Romania.”
All the games will be free to watch on the FIBA 3×3 YouTube channel and a full schedule and squad list for GB’s teams will be confirmed as the competition nears in June.
GB’s entry is again in collaboration with Basketball England, who are preparing for Team England’s appearance in the 3×3 competition at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
