With time to reflect after a positive FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup campaign that sadly didn’t end as intended, Hannah Jump knows that Great Britain’s involvement is the start of something big.
Entering the FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup Qualifiers as the sixth seed, with only Georgia ranked below them, the GB team showcased their prowess by reaching the finals.
Their journey was a testament to their skill and determination. In the finals, they put up a fierce fight, narrowly missing out on victory with a 21-17 loss against the second-seed Romania.
While the close defeat could have led to disappointment, the team, led by Jump, is choosing to focus on the positives.
Their optimistic outlook for the future of the national team in the fast-growing and exciting 3X3 format is a source of hope for all GB fans.
“Coming so close definitely motivates us to continue building the 3X3 game in Great Britain,” Jump said.
“It is such a fun style of basketball, and everyone who plays falls in love with it. I think this is just the start for how good we can be.”
While Great Britain is considered a relative newcomer to the 3X3 game, for Jump โ alongside team-mates Claire Paxton and Hannah Robb โ this isn’t their first rodeo, having already competed at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Jump claimed the silver medal with England, with the highlight being their magical Semi-Final win over Australia before coming so close to sealing gold but falling heartbreakingly to Canada.
The Warrington native, though, is still learning and adjusting to the 3X3 format. Unlike the Commonwealth Games, where the players, joined this year by Savannah Wilkinson, had ample time to prepare, the FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup Qualifiers were a different prospect.
“The main difference was just learning to play together in such a short time,” Jump explained.
“For the Commonwealth Games, we had a whole summer of prep that helped us peak right at the Games. So learning the game while learning how best to play with each other was the biggest challenge.”
And GB faced the challenge head-on, coming so close to punching their ticket to the FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup showpiece in Vienna.
The FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup marked the start of a busy summer for GB Basketball across all age groups and for both the 3×3 and 5v5 formats of the game, which includes the senior women’s and men’s team taking part in the Subway Summer Slam.
