GB Men set for Tyneside showdown with Latvia in World Cup Qualifying action

27th July 2022

Great Britain Men will look to cement a strong start to the FIBA 2023 World Cup Second Qualifying Round in August when they return to Newcastle to face Latvia at the Vertu Motors Arena.

GB have secured two wins in their last three outings in the north-east – toppling European heavyweights, Germany and Greece, and battling hard against a very talented Turkish side despite a depleted roster – and the venue has been confirmed as the host for August’s World Cup Qualifier versus Latvia on Sunday 28 August (6pm), with tickets now available to purchase here via the Newcastle Eagles Box Office.

This fixture will also serve as the team’s final outing on home soil before they venture to Milan ahead of EuroBasket 2022, where Nate Reinking’s side will do battle with Italy, Greece, Ukraine, Estonia and Croatia in the pool stages.

Looking ahead to returning to Newcastle for the Latvia fixture, GB Men’s captain Dan Clark said: “We’ve had a lot of success up in Newcastle over the last few years playing our home games there and we’ve always felt really comfortable playing at the Vertu Motors Arena.

“It is one of the budding basketball communities in the UK and we’ve had fantastic support from the Eagles community at all of our games there over the years, and we hope the fans there can help us produce another big performance.

“We’re excited to play in Newcastle again, in front of what is always a brilliant crowd, who can help us secure an important result for our World Cup qualifying campaign and give the team a send-off before we head to Milan to represent GB at EuroBasket.”

The Latvia fixture will be GB’s second qualifier of the campaign, coming off the back of an outing to Belgium which will take place earlier in the window, with more details on GB’s full schedule for the Second Qualifying Round available here.

Order your tickets now and join GB in Newcastle and support the Men’s side as they do battle with Latvia in the hope of securing another vital victory!
