U16 WOMEN: GB 66-44 AUSTRIA

20th August 2019

Great Britain finished off their group B schedule with a dominate performance, booking themselves a place in the quarter final after a 66-44 win over Austria.

The first quarter started back and forth with neither team taking a significant advantage. But then Coach Liburd’s side pushed on with an 8-3 run as GB built their first lead of the game. Austria managed to close the gap as the clock ran down and the quarter ended 14-12 in favour of the Brits.

Great Britain came out in the second with their focus on defence and managed to lock down the Austrians, keeping them to just 3 points for most of the quarter. GB managed to capitalise on their fantastic defence to scoring 12 points of their own, building a commanding lead in the process. However, as the half came to a close Austria manged to narrow the deficit and the teams went into the break with GB up 26-18.

As the teams came out for the 2nd half, Austria continued to close the gap with a quick 6-2 run. But as the quarter ran into the last five minutes GB turned it up a gear and scored a massive 20 points as they held the Austrians to just 3.

The final stanza started with the score 48-29 and GB good value for their lead. Coach Kendrick’s side didn’t switch off and managed to see the game out with a 18-15 final quarter, capping off a dominate performance. They will now play Slovenia this Thursday (22nd) in the quarter-final.
